Hey legends!
My name is Dave Weir, and I’ve been working in the industry for around 13 years.I could go on about my achievements, blah blah blah, but I want you to get to know the real me.I have been playing guitar since I was about 13. I’ve played heaps of live shows in multiple punk rock bands over the years. Had some super huge opportunities as a musician, however, I was never super comfortable with calling myself an experienced guitarist. I am happy to call myself a comfortable rhythm guitarist. When I was 18, I was lucky enough to get to record in an amazing studio in Warrnambool, Victoria. The best part was the engineer, Tony, was the most welcoming and inspiring tech to work with. We had so much fun, and it was such a great experience.
Fast forward quite a few years, I relocated to Geelong, Victoria. I was working a job that was in quite terrible conditions. Worked my way up to management. Thats ticking the job goal boxes right?
Oxygen College opened in Geelong in 2011, to which I jumped at the opportunity to study a Certificate III in Technical Production. Towards the end of the year, my workplace closed down, and I was made redundant. I then got a part time job with the College whilst I studied full time.
One thing led to another, and I have been teaching at the College since 2013, whilst being the resident tech of the studios. In 2015, Oxygen built a commercial grade studio called ‘Don’t Poke The Bear’. I have been one of the head techs there since it’s inception.
I have also been lucky enough to cut my teeth in the live world at The Barwon Club Hotel. A super renowned venue for all things rock n roll. This was an awesome opportunity to hone my craft and meet some of the worlds most amazing artists.
I have an incredible wife, Naomi, and a funny as hell son, Alex.
My studio is modest in size, however, I can accomodate guitars (electric & acoustic), midi instruments, vocals etc. Any drum tracking, I highly recommend Don’t Poke The Bear, as the live room is insanely energetic for huge drum sounds.
My philosophy in my career is, if you love what you do, it should be a rad time. I want to bring support, terrible dad humour, respect and just an all round chilled experience. Every artist, regardless of their level of their career, should have fun, feel listened to but hopefully even have the opportunity to get educated. I’m not afraid to help every artist out with suggestions to make their experience easier and their show/recording experience way more streamlined. At the same time, if you like playing loud, I will meet you in the middle!
If the artist has a good time, I will have a good time, but most importantly, the punters/listeners will have the best time!
I’m so freaking lucky to have had the opportunity to turn the hobby I love into the raddest career.
